Around 230 people took part in the big cycling event at the BayArena on Saturday – and it was a sweaty affair given the tropical temperatures.Over the past few weeks they were on edge hoping for good weather and their wishes were more than fulfilled at the end of the day. The pitch and interior of the BayArena was turned into a big cycling centre on Saturday – and, in very sultry conditions with temperatures of over 30° in the afternoon, one or two might have started sweating just looking on. The sporting ambition of around 230 participants at the first outdoor cycling event at the BayArena was not affected by the tropical heat.
From 10 o'clock in the morning they were energetically pedalling away on the ultramodern exercise bikes – they were encouraged and accompanied by loud music and six presenters on a stage in front of the East Stand who ensured enthusiasm and impressive cadence in the participants. The cheerleaders of the Leverkusen Wildcats, saxophone player and a DJ drew out the last reserves of energy from the cyclists. By the end of the event at five in the evening the fitness programme had included six sessions each lasting 50 minutes. Beginners as well as a ban cyclists at the big event in the BayArena were able to decide for themselves whether they wanted to hit the pedal is hard or take a more gentle approach to training. The event was rounded off in the VIP area at the BayArena with a big after cycle party. Water is essentialThe riders were able to enjoy a pasta buffet at lunch. Given the incredible heat and effect of the sun it was very important to have heads covered, suntan lotion and regular fluid intake. As the sprinklers at the BayArena could not be used to avoid damaging the sensitive high-tech exercise bikes there were plenty of pockets full of water with sponges for cooling off. And a manual grass sprinkler did at least offer some opportunity for a quick shower away from the saddle. As the official health partner of Bayer 04, pronova BKK had to be there at this sporting event. "Together with Bayer 04 we wanted to use special location of the arena to motivate people from near and wide to take more exercise," explained Lutz Kaiser, director of pronova BKK. "Cycling is gentle on the joints and with its varying intensity is ideally suited to sports freaks as well as amateur athletes for keeping fit."Participants from near and farSports enthusiasts from across the country made their way to the BayArena on Saturday. Participants at the cycling event did not just come from in and around Leverkusen and the Rhine Ruhr region but also from as far afield as Frankfurt, Heidelberg, Marburg, Dresden, Berlin, Hamburg and the Netherlands. |
